Take a break and get creative with wood craft at Gartmore House. David Mackay’s woodworking courses teach beginners and intermediates new tool skills from how to use a hand saw properly to crafting sculptures and safe table saw use. The course also includes things like how to get the best results from your hands along with extensive knowledge about different hard and soft woods.
The wood used on the course is storm damaged from the surrounding woodlands of Gartmore house, deadfall and purchased from a not-for-profit wood management yard in Oakley, Fife. If this sounds like a interesting week or weekend why not try one of our courses.
Beginners 2 Day Course – Making Bird House or Spice Rack
This beginners course is designed to give you the knowledge required in wood craft that will allow you to start making your own items at home straight away or begin your path along our series of wood courses to learn more advanced techniques.
On the course you will be given the choice of making a spice rack for the kitchen or tool rack for the work shop. These include a box for your plane or a chisel rack or a small bird table, which can be standing or hanging. Although small items, they will teach you a surprising amount about wood, what is a suitable piece of wood for your project, what is not and most importantly why.
As the course progresses you will get a demonstration on how to use a multitude of hand and power tools from table saws and hand planes to sanders and biscuits jointers. Not forgetting the most important tool – the measuring tape (or ruler). We will of course demonstrate how to use them in a safe environment.
Intermediate 5 Day Course – Making a Mirror and Side (or Occasional) Table
This more advanced course is designed to compliment our 2 day beginners course and allow you to progress or finalise your wood skills and create a range of wood joints suitable for production of fine furniture at home or in your workshop. On the course you will use the techniques you have learned to make an elegant mirror, picture frame or a small table, for youself or as a gift.
This course will also include more advanced tool use including the mortise makers, biscuits jointers, advanced table saw, mirror cutting and finishing tools. Making these more advance furniture pieces will give you more confidence at home and the knowledge to continue making similar stunning furniture.
One day of this course will involve a woodland walk discussing different trees and there uses both historically and today. Plus a visit to Scottish Woods, one of Scotland’s largest hard wood yards. Here you will visit their showroom, where you will be able to select your own wood with guidance from David for further projects and enjoy a special discount off all wood of 20% on the day.
David grew up in a small village outside Stirling and has always had a love for the hills, the woods and the animals that surround them. David opened Sticks and Stones, a small eco-aware furniture business that endeavors to produce pieces that are carbon minimal in their collection of materials and their construction processes. David has been making furniture for over 8 years and now has pieces of his work in America, Switzerland, Norway and all of Great Britain. He has created pieces for the RSPB, Historic Scotland and the Smith Art Gallery in Stirling. Davids art style is one free flowing lines and the encourager of natural shapes and forms. David looks forward to helping you grow your knowledge and learn to be able to love your work like he does almost every day.
