Jewellery Making Holidays
Jewellery making holidays at Gartmore House are run by local jeweller Jo Pudelko and we offer a selection of 5-night and weekend stays.
An introduction to jewellery – 5 nights
This holiday is a perfect introduction to jewellery making and is suitable for beginners. You will learn how to make a basic ring using sheet or wire, using the various skills and techniques involved to complete your very own Silver ring. You will then have the opportunity to make a bezel set ring with a stone of your choice or a pendant for you and others to admire.
The class will begin with a short overview of the tools and equipment you will be using and health and safety requirements. You will then make a mock-up of a ring in base metal, allowing each student to experience the various techniques required to complete a ring from start to finish. You will learn how to use a piercing saw, filing, softening metal (annealing), shaping, forming, soldering, and polishing.
Once you have completed your mock-up ring you will be shown how to apply texture and finishes to metal for the purpose of creating your very own individual design. Time will be given to experiment and practise these techniques before moving on to create your own ring in Silver, with your chosen design, using the skills you have learned.
Once you have mastered the process of making a ring you can progress to making a stone set ring or pendant. The type of setting you will be making is a bezel set which consists of wrapping fine silver around a cabochon (polished gemstone that has a flat bottom) and attaching a sterling silver base to form a cup.
Each person on this course will be provided with base metal to experiment with, silver for their finished ring/pendant and a choice of gemstone. Elaine will be on hand to work with students on a one to one basis, guiding them through the designing and making of their rings.
