Join our beginners Beadwork Weekends in association with Mairi Carlton who is one of Scotland’s most experienced beaders. Beadwork is the art of weaving beads (usually small seed beads) using needle and thread. There are several basic stitches that underpin beadwork techniques. Each introduction to beadwork weekend will cover one of these stitches, making several gorgeous pieces.
Mairi has been teaching beading in the West of Scotland for many years and runs the extremely popular Beadwildered beadwork group in Glasgow. She is also on the board of the Beadworkers Guild of Great Britain and regularly teaches at the Great British Beading Show.
Right Angle Weave – Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd June 2018
Right Angle Weave (or RAW as it’s known in the beading world) is one of the core beadwork stitches which has endless possibilities for variation. This weekend course will start on the Saturday morning with a simple RAW bracelet made with Japanese Miyuki seed beads and Swarovski crystals. On the Saturday afternoon, beaders will progress on to the Victoria Bracelet – a ladder stitch piece following the same thread paths as the RAW stitch, using bugles beads, seeds and crystals. On the Sunday, beaders will make a RAW pendant in crystals and a Honeycomb or Trellis bracelet which demonstrates how RAW can be adapted.
Spirals – Friday 31st August – Sunday 2nd September 2018
Weaving beads into Spirals is a sure fire way to get hooked on beading! On this weekend, beaders will start with Spiral Staircase, a simple but beautiful stitch using miyuki Japanese seed beads which will work up into a necklace and then on the Saturday afternoon a bracelet using Dutch Spiral. On the Sunday beaders will make a soft herringbone spiral bracelet and also have the opportunity to explore Spiral Lace.
On both of these weekends beaders will go away with 4 patterns taught in class plus a couple more to keep going along with many ideas of how to adapt and explore the stitches. Each beader will get a starter kit which will have everything needed for the weekend, plus a small amount of beads to keep going at home.
There will also be a small pop up shop in the class, provided by www.mrsmagooty.co.uk should beaders want to buy other beads/colour ways for future projects.
Weekends are priced £329 per person and include:
- Accommodation in Gartmore House
- Full board – breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Expert beading tuition and all materials required for the course (top quality Japanese seed beads and Swarovski crystals)
